It is awe surprising and awe inspiring at the same time to know that the acclaimed No. 1 in the Top 100 DJs of the world for two straight years of 2013 to 2014 already started his life in the Electronic Dance Music industry in just the age of 12. When his fellow same aged kids were still just trying to graduate from grade school, he was already mixing up remixes in nightclubs. Impossible? Not so much for this year’s newest and youngest Dutch DJ who topped the charts—Hardwell.
Robert van de Corput, or most famous for the name Hardwell, was born on January 7, 1988 at Breda, Netherlands. Robert’s early introduction to music was when he started to learn playing the piano when he was just four. But it was at the age of 10 when he was really caught up into EDM after watching a documentary about Dutch Dance Music that featured DJs Armin van Buuren, Ferry Corsten and Tiesto who later on became his greatest influence.
Robert’s career began when he DJed at a friend’s birthday party in front of a hundred people. That became his first gig. Then numerous gigs came next as he started playing at clubs. His passion was greatly supported by his parents that it was his father who gave him the name Hardwell which was an English translation of their last name. When Robert was 14 to 18 years old, he played in various clubs in front of hundreds of people dancing to the music he created. Because he was still a minor at that time, his parents would chaperone him.
At 18, Hardwell launched his first Eclectic Beatz compilation series which became one of the bestselling mix CDs at that time. In wasn’t long enough that he started to claim the No. 1 spot in the Dutch dance single chart in 2008. And mind you, that was six times in a row. However it was really in 2009, in the release of his bootleg, “Show Me Love vs. Be” that Hardwell’s success cannoned.
In 2010, Hardwell formed his own record label, Revealed Recordings and would release a compilation album, “Hardwell Presents Revealed”, featuring the label’s biggest tracks of the year, annually. In 2011 Hardwell formed his own radio show and podcast, Hardwell On Air and reached No. 24 in DJ’s Magazine Top 100 DJ’s annual poll. His music was being loved by more and more people that in 2012, he rose up to a surprising No. 6 and won Best Breakthrough DJ at the 2012 Miami iDMA Awards. In 2013, he launched his very first tour, “I Am Hardwell” and played a live set on the main stage of Ultra Music Festival and was watched by over 80,000 people making it the most watched set in Ultra live broadcast.
And if things were still not going so hard well, he conquered the throne and took the No. 1 spot in DJ’s Magazine Top 100 DJs of the year and did a repeat the following year of 2014. This Dutch DJ of the Netherlands is truly now this year’s most famous DJ in EDM Industry.
